Zhongyin: Living Architecture
“Zhongyin” is an architectural and spatial planning project set to be realized in Yunhe, Zhejiang, China. Rooted in the theatricality of space, the project explores how the environment itself becomes part of the narrative. Centered around nature, time, and performativity, it draws inspiration from the literati tradition of mountain retreats, integrating classical garden design, landscape aesthetics, and cultural experiences to shape a dynamic spatial theater.
Referencing the garden principle of “changing views with movement” , the design employs winding paths, framed vistas, and borrowed scenery to transform movement into an immersive spatial narrative. The 24 Solar Terms —a traditional time system marking seasonal transitions—serve as a temporal framework, guiding the rhythm of spatial experience. Inspired by the “Nine Refined Pursuits”of the ancients—Qin playing, calligraphy, painting, poetry, wine savoring, flower cultivation, tea appreciation, incense rituals, and seeking tranquility—the space is designed not only for daily life but also as a stage for interaction between people, nature, and time.
